Pondless Waterfall Installation on Mark Lane, Victoria, BC

Waterworks recently completed a full pondless waterfall rebuild for a homeowner on Mark Lane in Victoria, BC. The client already had a water feature in place, but they came to us looking for something that would look more natural and blend into their landscape. Our goal was to create a waterfall that felt like part of the rock face and surrounding environment, while also functioning better and requiring less maintenance.

Deconstructing the Old Waterfall

Before we could begin the new build, we had to remove everything from the original waterfall. This part of the job is always demanding work. We shoveled out all the loose small rock material and dug through every layer of gravel and soil. Anything that had been cemented or glued together needed to be broken apart with a sledgehammer and a pickaxe.

Deconstruction often takes a full day because every rock has to be removed safely and the entire area needs to be opened up so we can start fresh. By the end of this stage, we had a completely cleared and exposed workspace that was ready for rebuilding.

Preparing the Area and Installing the Liner

Once the old material was removed, we cleaned up the area and prepared the base for the new pondless waterfall system. The first major step in the rebuild was laying down a fresh pond liner. This creates a sealed zone that prevents any water from escaping into the soil, which is important for long-term performance in Victoria’s varied terrain and moisture conditions.

After the liner was in place, we installed irrigation piping and attached it to the pond float valve at the bottom. This float valve automatically refills the reservoir as water evaporates, which keeps the system consistent throughout the year.

Although we always start with a design plan, we adjusted the layout as we worked, allowing the stones to settle naturally and fit the slope, which helps create a smooth and realistic flow path.

Placing the Large Feature Stones

With the foundation set, we brought in the large stone material. These stones form the main structure of the waterfall, so we focused on creating a natural staircase effect that looked like a real stream bed. Each large rock was set carefully and levelled to shape the direction of the water.

To stabilize the stones and seal any gaps, we used pond foam. This helps guide water along the correct route and prevents it from disappearing behind the rockwork.

Adding Medium and Small Stone

Once the main stones were secured, we began filling the rest of the structure with medium and small stone. This stage is where the waterfall transitions into a finished, natural looking feature. We used these stones to hide the pond foam, liner edges, plumbing, and pump materials.

Every rock was placed intentionally to maintain visual balance and create the appearance of a real stream flowing down the hillside. By the time this step was finished, the entire feature looked cohesive and blended with the existing landscaping.

Cleaning, Rinsing, and Trimming the Liner

After the waterfall structure was complete, we cleaned and rinsed the entire area. This removes any soil and dust that can cloud the water during the first run. We also trimmed down all the visible pond liner and tucked it out of sight. Hiding the liner is one of the most important final steps because it keeps the waterfall looking natural and polished.

Adding Finishing Touches and Landscape Features

To complete the project, we added accent features around the reservoir and along the edges of the waterfall. This included small garden beds for new plantings and decorative elements chosen by the homeowner. We also installed pond lighting, which makes an enormous difference at night. The lights highlight the movement of the water, the texture of the stone, and the surrounding plants, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere after sunset.

The final result is a pondless waterfall that looks like it belongs on the property and complements the rocky hillside on Mark Lane. It is low maintenance, energy efficient, and blends perfectly with the natural landscape that Victoria is known for.
